Local voters, turning out in better-than-average strength, have soundly defeated a proposal to switch the city’s time zone standard from Central to Mountain. The final tally was 2,368 against, 381 for. Thus, Mandan continues to be one of three North Dakota communities west of the Missouri River to operate on Central time. Williston and Fort Yates also set their clocks to Central, but the remaining west river area goes by Mountain Time. The MST movement was defeated heavily in all 15 precincts of Mandan.
Pioneers of the old North Dakota Nonpartisan League were applauded by top federal and state officials in commemoration of the organization’s recent 50th anniversary. In a banquet hall lined with old NPL campaign posters, praise was heard from Democrats Sen. Quentin Burdick, Rep. Rolland Redlin, Gov. William Guy and others in an event preceding the 14-state Midwest Democratic Conference held at the Patterson Hotel convention hall. The conference itself was highlighted by an address delivered at a $25-a-plate dinner by U. S. Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey.
Val Gerving of Glen Ullin has been re-elected president of the Production Credit Association of Mandan; re-elected vice president was Walter Clooten, Bismarck. Mandan’s Clarence West is the PCA’s general manager and secretary-treasurer.
