Forest Hills: Voicer H.P. Amos’s call to “retire NYPD’s retrograde flag,” which he calls a symbol of white superiority, has no factual basis.
The flag, created in 1919 and purposefully echoing the stars and stripes of the American flag, was intended to pay tribute not only to the NYPD but to the City of New York itself. The blue canton represents the blue uniform many organized police forces wore then and that the NYPD still wears today. The stars in the blue field represent the 23 original towns and settlements that were in the greater New York City area between 1624 and 1898, with one additional star to represent the consolidation of New York City in 1898. The five green stripes represent the five boroughs.
Although the color green is often associated with the Irish, it is on the flag to pay tribute to New York City’s original constabulary. In the 1600s, New Amsterdam was a Dutch settlement that extended from present day Battery with like Hp HP43120A Battery, Hp M1722A Battery, Hp M1723A Battery, Hp M1758A Battery, Hp M1770A Battery, Hp M1771 Battery, Hp M1772A Battery, Hp M2460A Battery, Biocare Battery, Biocare ECG-101 Battery, Biocare ECG-300G Battery, GE DASH 2500 BatteryPark to Wall St. Everything north of the wall that street takes its name from was farmland. The big problem then was not crime, but fire. So the settlement created a night watch under the direction of the “Schout Fiscal,” a combination prosecutor, sheriff, chief of police, constable and warden.
These paid watchmen — each with a green-glassed lantern on a pole to show the watch was on duty, a musket and a rattle — would patrol the countryside as well as the city streets looking for fires. When they found one, they would sound the rattle to wake nearby farmers to help extinguish the flames. The color green was chosen because it was conspicuous, and a green lantern also hung on the watch house building.
Today, you can see a green light in front of every police department facility, paying tribute to the first watchmen. The light lets New Yorkers know that the police are always on duty and ready to serve the public. Jeremy M. Davis
Bronx: I wish Americans could summon up the courage of the Londoners of World War II. The blitz started on Sept. 7, 1940, when German bombers killed 450 and injured 1,300. Over the entire blitz, 32,000 civilians were killed, 87,000 were seriously injured and two million houses were destroyed. Yet England stood united behind Winston Churchill; unlike a hysterical and divided America. We have met the enemy, and it is us! Gilbert M. Lane
Spring Lake, N.J.: And we all thought Hitler was dead! Donald Trump may have a following, but that’s not such a big surprise when you look at 1940s news reels and see close to a million Germans with their arms outstretched. Is history repeating itself? Barbara Barnett
